Atmos Rewards: The Hawaii Traveler’s Program

Atmos Rewards is the loyalty program that came out of the Alaska Airlines & Hawaiian Airlines merger. One unified program covering both airlines' routes, both airlines' miles, & a single membership account.

For Hawaii-based households, Atmos is one of the more interesting branded programs in the points game. Here's why.

Atmos Joined the oneworld Alliance

The biggest news for Atmos members: Alaska is now part of the oneworld alliance. That changes the math on Atmos points significantly.

Before the alliance addition, Atmos points were pretty much only redeemable on Alaska & Hawaiian. After the alliance addition, Atmos points open up redemption on the entire oneworld network - including:

  • Japan Airlines (JAL) - especially valuable for Hawaii travelers heading to Asia

  • Qantas - for Australia, New Zealand, & the South Pacific

  • British Airways - for Europe & worldwide routing

  • Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Finnair, Royal Jordanian, & a dozen more

So when you're earning Atmos points on Atmos cards or Atmos flights, you're not stuck with two airlines anymore - you've got access to a global network. This is a meaningful shift that hadn't been true before the merger & oneworld addition.

Why Atmos Matters Specifically for Hawaii

Atmos is a branded program (not transferable points), but it has structural advantages that the major transferable currencies can't fully replicate for kamaʻāina:

Hawaii-to-mainland routing. Atmos has dense coverage between Hawaii & the U.S. West Coast, plus connections beyond. Both Alaska & Hawaiian operate from HNL, OGG, KOA, LIH - so award redemption availability tends to be better than what you'll find through a transferable-currency partner.

Companion fare benefits. Some of the Atmos credit cards include companion fare benefits - one of the more genuinely useful perks in the points world for households traveling together.

Tier status & lounge access. Members who fly enough on the Atmos network can earn tier status, which carries meaningful perks at HNL & other airports - free checked bags, priority boarding, lounge access at qualifying tiers.

Predictable redemption value. Atmos's award charts tend to be relatively stable & predictable, especially for routes kamaʻāina care about.

Branded vs. Transferable: When to Lean Atmos

For most members in my Ohana Program, the foundation of the strategy is transferable currencies (Chase points, Amex points, Capital One miles). Those flexibility-first currencies do the heavy lifting.

Atmos comes into the picture when:

  • You fly Alaska or Hawaiian metal regularly enough to benefit from tier status

  • You're focused on a specific redemption that Atmos handles better than the transferable-currency options

  • Your household is far enough into my Ohana Program that we're layering branded cards onto your transferable-currency foundation

It's rarely the first card I'd recommend. But for the right Hawaii household at the right point in their sequence, an Atmos card earns a place in the wallet.

Should you get 1 Atmos card? 2? In what sequence? My Ohana Program steps you through it based on your specific card holdings, goals, & average monthly credit card spend.

How Many Atmos Cards Are There?

A few. There's a premium card with stronger benefits & a higher annual fee, plus several standard-tier options. Each one trades off annual fee, welcome bonus, & ongoing benefits differently.

When the timing's right for an Atmos card in your sequence, I'll walk you through which one fits your situation specifically. The right card depends on how often you fly the network, whether the companion fare matters to you, & how the math shakes out against the alternatives.

Don't Cancel an Existing Atmos Card Without Talking First

If you already hold an Atmos card from before the merger - either a legacy Alaska Airlines card or a legacy Hawaiian Airlines card - those have transitioned into the unified Atmos program. The card you applied for years ago likely now functions as part of the new Atmos lineup.

Before canceling, downgrading, or product-changing any existing Atmos card, lmk. The transition rules are specific & sometimes there's value in your current card you might not realize.
