Atmos Points vs. Chase & Amex: Should You Stockpile?
Should I be stockpiling Atmos Rewards points for Hawaii & Alaska flights, or are my Chase & Amex points just as good?
Aloha, & great question - this one trips up a lot of folks. Atmos Rewards is a strong program, no argument there. But here's what doesn't get talked about enough: for the Hawaii & Alaska flights you actually care about, you'll spend about the same number of points whether you redeem Atmos directly or go through a transferable currency. So stockpiling Atmos doesn't really buy you an edge on those core routes - & for most of our ohana, transferable points like Chase & Amex do a lot more everywhere else.
Same Hawaii Flights, About the Same Points - No Atmos Balance Needed
Alaska is now in the oneworld alliance, so you can book Alaska-operated Hawaii flights through any oneworld program - British Airways included. And you can top up British Airways points straight from Chase or Amex (Capital One works too).
A West Coast-Hawaii economy seat lands right in the same range as what Atmos itself charges for the identical flight - same seat, similar cost, no Atmos balance required. Stockpiling Atmos doesn't get you to the islands any cheaper than flexible points already do.
Atmos Is Also Slow to Build
On top of that, Atmos is hard to feed. Beyond flying, the only ways to add points are Marriott (horrible transfer ratios) or Bilt (not recommended) - none of the major bank points transfer in. Your Chase, Amex, & Capital One points, by contrast, stack up fast from everyday spending & welcome bonuses.
Flexible Points Reach Far More Seats
Transferable points also reach the other airlines serving Hawaii travelers - United through Chase & Delta through Amex - so you're never boxed into one airline's seats or one award chart.
Atmos points live in a single ecosystem. If that program devalues or your route isn't open, you're stuck. Flexible points keep every door open & let you pivot to whatever flies that day.
Bottom Line
Keep your earning flexible. You'll reach Hawaii & Alaska for about the same as Atmos would cost you - often less - your balance grows faster, & your points still reach United, Delta, & the whole oneworld network for everything else. No eggs in one basket.
