Hawaiian Airlines turned on three Huaka‘i by Hawaiian upgrades today. The headline is simple: kama‘āina now get two free checked bags on Neighbor Island flights instead of one, and membership is still free.
Here is each change, what it is actually worth in dollars, and where the fine print bites.
What changed with Huaka‘i by Hawaiian on September 2, 2026?
Three things changed, all live today:
- Two free checked bags on Neighbor Island flights, up from one. Sports equipment like surfboards and golf bags still counts toward the allowance instead of triggering a separate fee.
- 3x Atmos Rewards points on Foodland Maika‘i redemptions for Huaka‘i members, capped at 3,000 bonus Atmos points per year.

What did not change: Huaka‘i is still free, still limited to Atmos Rewards members with a verified Hawaii address, and eligibility is still revalidated annually. The separately announced 50% bonus on points and status points for Neighbor Island flights is still tied to the choice-based earning rollout later in 2026, so treat that one as coming, not live.
Change 1: how much is the second free checked bag worth?
Forty dollars per person, each way. Hawaiian charges $30 for the first Neighbor Island checked bag and $40 for the second. Huaka‘i already covered the first bag, so this change is worth the full $40 every time a member checks a second bag interisland.
For a family of four flying HNL to OGG round trip with two bags each, that is $320 in fees you stop paying, on a program that costs nothing to join. Check current fees at booking, since bag pricing moves more often than people expect.
The Huaka‘i bag benefit has not been combinable with other free bag entitlements. Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard cardmembers, Atmos elite members, Premier Club members, and First Class passengers receive their existing allotment rather than stacking a Huaka‘i bag on top. Confirm the current terms before planning around a bigger allowance.
Change 2: how does the Foodland 3x Atmos Rewards deal work?
Link your Foodland Maika‘i account to your Atmos Rewards account, shop as usual to earn one Maika‘i point per dollar, then redeem those points for Atmos Rewards points at checkout. Huaka‘i members now get triple the standard conversion, up to 3,000 bonus Atmos points per year.
Here is the part nobody spells out. The cap is on bonus points, not total points. A 1,000 point redemption pays 1,000 base plus 2,000 bonus, so two of those in a year gets you 2,000 base plus the full 3,000 bonus. That is 5,000 Atmos Rewards points from 2,000 Maika‘i points. Everything after reverts to 1:1.
Two thousand Maika‘i points is roughly $2,000 of qualifying Foodland spend, which for most island households is a few months of normal groceries. And 5,000 Atmos points clears the 4,500 point floor for a one-way Neighbor Island award. Groceries to a flight to Hilo is not a bad trade on spending you were doing anyway.
The move I would make
- Link Maika‘i and Atmos Rewards at foodland.com. One-time setup.
- Bank points to the 1,000 tier rather than redeeming at 250, since 1,000 pays 3,000 Atmos versus 600.
- Do two 1,000 point redemptions across the year to max the bonus cap, then stop optimizing.
- Watch the clock. Maika‘i points expire the last day of the month six months after you earn them, and Atmos points take six to eight weeks to post.
What about the 100,000 point giveaway?
Through September 30, 2026, every Maika‘i to Atmos redemption is automatically entered in a drawing for 100,000 Atmos Rewards points. Three winners, up to fifteen entries per person. Fifteen entries means fifteen redemptions, which pushes you toward the worse 250 point tier. My read: three winners statewide is a raffle, not a benefit. Redeem the way that maximizes points, take whatever entries fall out, and treat the drawing as a lottery ticket.
Change 3: what do the quarterly discount codes get you now?
Huaka‘i members receive four one-time codes a year, issued on the first of the month before each quarter: March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1. Codes land in your Atmos Rewards wallet. All members get 10% off one Neighbor Island booking. Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard cardmembers and Atmos Rewards Visa cardholders get 20%.
The clarified language is that one code covers the whole booking, up to six companions, not just the member's seat. On a family of four booking at roughly $160 round trip each, a 20% code is about $128 off and a 10% code is about $64.
Your Q4 code dropped on September 1. Log into your Atmos Rewards wallet and check for it now. These are single-use codes that expire, and the most common way locals waste this benefit is simply forgetting the email arrived.
Is the Hawaiian Airlines card still worth holding for the bag benefit?
On Neighbor Island routes, that reason just got weaker. The Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard has given primary cardmembers two free checked bags since 2022, and Huaka‘i now gives every enrolled Hawaii resident the same two bags interisland for free.
The card still does things Huaka‘i does not. It gets you the 20% quarterly tier instead of 10%, the two-bag benefit extends to Hawaii to North America flights where Huaka‘i does not reach, and you earn points on everyday spend. How do I join Huaka‘i by Hawaiian?
You need an Atmos Rewards account with a verified Hawaii address, then enroll free at hawaiianairlines.com/huakai. No fee, no minimum residency, and eligibility is revalidated once a year on your enrollment anniversary.
- Everyone in the household should enroll separately. Bag benefits attach to the traveling member, so a family of four wants four enrollments, not one.
- Put your Atmos Rewards number on the reservation before you check bags. The benefit applies off the number on the booking, not off your face at the counter.
- Verify your address is current. If you moved and never updated Atmos Rewards, annual revalidation is where that will bite you.

For kama‘āina flying to see family, get to a specialist appointment on O‘ahu, or haul a board to a contest on another island, the second bag is straightforwardly good news with no catch I can find.
