Do Business Cards Count Toward 5/24?

Mostly no - & that's exactly what makes them so useful in your strategy.

The General Rule

Most business credit cards report only to business credit bureaus - not to your personal credit report. Since the 5/24 count is based on personal cards on your personal credit report, business cards usually don't show up in the count at all.

That means you can earn welcome bonuses on business cards without using up any of your 5 personal slots in the 24-month window. As long as you stay at 4/24 or under, business cards stack on top of personal cards - not against them.

This is a big strategic advantage in the points game.

Important: This Doesn't Mean You're Always Eligible

Two things to keep straight:

  1. Business cards don't COUNT toward 5/24.

  2. But once you've crossed 5/24, rule-enforcing issuers won't APPROVE you for their business cards either.

The first matters for staying under the line. The second matters once you've crossed it. Don't confuse "doesn't count" with "always approved."

That's why I time business card applications carefully while you're at 4/24 or under. Once you cross the line, that window closes for cards from rule-enforcing issuers.

The Exceptions

A couple of issuers' business cards DO report to your personal credit report & DO count toward 5/24. If any of yours fall into that bucket, I'll flag it when we're running your numbers.

What This Means for You

If you don't have a formal business, you might be wondering whether you can even apply for business cards in the first place. Short answer: probably yes, & it's more straightforward than most people expect. There's a separate page on that.

When I sequence your cards, business cards almost always get woven in early - capturing welcome bonuses without using up your personal 5/24 slots is too valuable to skip.
