Approved! Now What?
Congrats - the welcome bonus engine just kicked on. Here's the short list of what to do in the first few days.
1. Set Up the Online Account
Head to the issuer's website & create your online login. You'll need it for autopay setup, tracking spend, statements, & everything else.
2. Set Up Autopay - Full Statement Balance, Due Date
This is the one operational rule we never bend on. Set autopay for "statement balance" on the "due date" - that way you never carry a balance, never trigger interest, & never miss a payment.
Many issuers offer to set up autopay during the online account setup flow. Take 'em up on it. If not, find it under "Payments" in the account menu.
More on why this matters here.
3. Watch the Mail for the Physical Card
Standard delivery is typically 7-10 business days. If you need it faster, most issuers offer free expedited delivery if you call or chat - no shame in asking.
When the card arrives, activate it. Activation instructions are usually inside the mailer or available through the issuer's app.
4. Add to Your Digital Wallet (Optional, but Useful)
Some issuers give you a virtual card number IMMEDIATELY upon approval - meaning you can start spending toward your welcome bonus before the physical card arrives. If yours does, load it into Apple Pay / Google Pay / Samsung Pay & start using it.
If it doesn't, no worries - just wait for the physical card.
5. Start Charging Your Normal Spending
The clock on the welcome bonus starts the day you're approved. Most cards give you 3 months from the approval date to hit the minimum spend.
Don't overthink this - just shift your normal monthly charges (groceries, gas, bills, etc.) onto the new card. The whole strategy is built on your normal spend, not extra spend.
What I Do From Here
You'll hear from me at the right times:
"You're halfway through your spend window" - mid-window check-in
"You're getting close - here's a prepay tactic if you need a final boost" - if it's looking tight
"Spending requirement hit" - confirmation when the welcome bonus lands
Annual fee approach - let's be in touch when it's getting close
You don't have to track any of this yourself. Just charge your normal stuff & let the system run.
One Quick Ask
Shoot me a text once you've activated the new card. That confirmation closes the loop on this application & lets me start tracking your spend window. A simple "activated!" is plenty.
