A foundation card, not a headline card
On its own, the Freedom Unlimited is fine but unremarkable — flat 1.5% cash back doesn’t beat the best 2% cards. Judged in isolation, it’s easy to overlook.
That’s the wrong way to judge it. Its real value only shows up when it’s paired with a Sapphire or Ink card: the “cash back” converts to Chase Ultimate Rewards points, and those points transfer to airline and hotel partners. That transferability is what separates a few cents of cash back from a Hyatt night or an award flight — and for Hawaii flyers, it’s where the math gets interesting.
My view: with a $0 annual fee, there’s little reason not to hold it as the everyday-spend engine in a Chase setup. Just don’t treat it as a standalone — without an Ultimate Rewards card alongside it, you’re leaving most of its value on the table.
