FAQs & Merger Updates

Hawaiian Airlines & Alaska Merger: Extended FAQ

What will happen to my HawaiianMiles during the Alaska merger, and will I lose them?
No, you will not lose your HawaiianMiles. Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines have confirmed that all existing HawaiianMiles will convert at a 1:1 ratio into Alaska’s Mileage Plan. This transition is set to occur in August 2025, when both airlines will launch a unified loyalty program. Until then, your HawaiianMiles will continue to be valid and redeemable through the HawaiianMiles program. If you hold elite Pualani Gold or Platinum status, it will also be matched or converted into an equivalent tier in Alaska’s Mileage Plan, ensuring continuity of your benefits. In the meantime, you can link your HawaiianMiles and Alaska Mileage Plan accounts now to begin earning reciprocal miles and benefits. However, actual transfers or pooling of miles won't begin until August 2025. HawaiianMiles earned from current Barclays Hawaiian Airlines credit cards will continue to accrue and will be transitioned to Alaska miles at the time of program integration. Amex Membership Rewards transfers into HawaiianMiles will end on June 30, 2025, so be sure to transfer any points before that deadline if needed. The merger aims to preserve the value of your loyalty while opening up new travel options across the oneworld alliance. So rest assured — your miles are not going away. They’re just changing homes.
Will HawaiianMiles be worth more or less when they convert to Alaska miles?
Miles will convert 1:1 into Alaska Mileage Plan. Value will vary based on redemptions. Alaska's program has some premium award sweet spots but also some higher pricing compared to Hawaiian's old chart.
What will happen to my Pualani Elite status in the new program?
Pualani statuses will be matched into Alaska Mileage Plan. Status benefits will continue through 2025, with full details to be announced closer to the full merger.
Will Alaska start flying interisland routes in Hawaii?
Not currently. Hawaiian will continue interisland flights for now. Long-term changes are possible but unconfirmed.
Will I still be able to book flights to Japan using miles after June 30?
Not via Hawaiian's current partners like Japan Airlines. However, Alaska partners with JAL, so Mileage Plan members will still be able to book Japan awards through Alaska.
Will there still be a Hawaiian Airlines brand?
Yes, for now. Both airlines will continue to operate under separate brands initially. Long-term branding decisions are pending regulatory and corporate decisions.
Can I pool my Hawaiian and Alaska miles today?
You can link your accounts, but actual pooling or transfer will not happen until August 2025 when the loyalty programs are fully merged.
If I book a partner award now for travel after June 30, will it be honored?
Yes, as long as the award is booked and ticketed by June 30, it will be honored for travel up to February 28, 2026.
Should I use my HawaiianMiles now or wait for the Alaska conversion?
Use them now if you want to book partner airlines or use Amex points. Otherwise, it may be worth waiting to redeem under Alaska’s program if you want access to new partners or better award pricing.
What happens to existing Hawaiian Airlines travel credits or vouchers?
These remain valid for use on Hawaiian Airlines. No expiration or deactivation has been announced yet.
Will I earn bonus miles from Barclays or Amex cards after June 30?
You’ll still earn miles from Barclays Hawaiian cards. However, Amex Membership Rewards transfers to HawaiianMiles end June 30, 2025.
Can I still get a new Hawaiian Airlines credit card?
Yes, but the future of the Barclays Hawaiian card is unclear. It may be phased out or rebranded under Alaska later.
Will there be a special transfer bonus when HawaiianMiles convert to Alaska?
None has been announced. Current guidance is a straight 1:1 transfer, but Alaska may introduce promotional bonuses later in 2025.
