The Qatar Avios Hawaii Sweet Spot: 16,000 Points From HNL to LAX & the Mainland

- I ran the search myself and found 121 open dates between August 2026 and July 2027. This is a real sweet spot, not a chart footnote.
- Amex is running a 30% Avios transfer bonus through September 27, 2026, which drops a one way to 13,000 Amex points and a round trip to 25,000.
- Atmos Rewards takes points from exactly one bank. Avios takes them from nearly all of them. That is the real reason Qatar matters to us.
- Find the seat before you transfer. Transfers are one way and final, and December business class is already a dead zone.
Daily Drop ran a Hawaii sweet spot piece on July 31 pointing out you can fly the West Coast to Honolulu for 16,000 Qatar Avios. Good catch, but it was written for mainland folks flying toward us. Every local reads that and thinks the same thing: what about the other direction?
It works identically flying out, because the chart is distance based. And there is a bigger story underneath, which is that Avios quietly turns nearly every bank point you already have into a seat leaving our islands.
What is the Qatar Avios Hawaii sweet spot?
Qatar Airways Privilege Club charges 16,000 Avios one way in economy, plus roughly $5.60 in taxes, for a nonstop under 3,000 miles operated by Alaska, Hawaiian, or American. Every West Coast gateway from Honolulu sits inside that band, so Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Phoenix all price the same. Business class on that band is 43,000 Avios.
Avios is a shared currency used by five programs. British Airways Club, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, and Qatar all hold Avios, and you move them between programs free at 1:1. Each one prices partner flights off its own chart, and Qatar's happens to be the friendliest for North American flights under 3,000 miles, which is exactly where Hawaii to the West Coast lands.

Hawaiian joined oneworld on April 22, 2026, its HA flight code retired into Alaska's AS prefix, and Hawaiian metal became bookable with Avios. Is there actually availability from HNL?
Yes, and plenty. I ran this on August 12, 2026 and found 121 separate departure dates between August 19, 2026 and July 7, 2027 where Honolulu to Los Angeles priced at 16,000 Avios nonstop in economy. Of those, 86 also showed business class at 43,000 Avios, or 71% of the dates.

Two things jump out. December 2026 had eleven economy dates and zero business class dates. Holiday premium space is already gone, which is exactly when families here want to fly. But economy held up anyway, and December 25 was showing 16,000 Avios when I ran it. Christmas Day out of Honolulu at 16k is genuinely useful.
March and May 2027 were the strongest months, with 14 and 15 business dates. If your travel is flexible, look there first.
Which banks transfer to Qatar Avios?
Nearly every major US flexible currency reaches Qatar Avios, either directly or through one hop. Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt transfer straight into Privilege Club at 1:1. Chase and Wells Fargo do not, so you send points to British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus first, then move the Avios over for free.

How does the Amex 30% bonus change the math?
Amex is offering a 30% bonus on transfers to British Airways Club, Iberia Plus, and Aer Lingus AerClub from August 3 through 11:59pm Mountain Time on September 27, 2026. Every 1,000 Membership Rewards points becomes 1,300 Avios, and because Avios moves between programs free, you route the bonus into Qatar.
One detail nobody mentions and it matters: Amex only transfers in 1,000 point increments. You cannot send the 12,308 the raw math suggests. You send 13,000, which lands as 16,900 Avios. Every figure below is the achievable number, not the theoretical one.
Round trip beats doubling, because you transfer once. A 32,000 Avios round trip to Los Angeles needs 25,000 Amex points during the bonus, landing as 32,500 Avios. Scale to a family of four and 128,000 Avios takes 99,000 Amex points. Under 100,000 to fly four people to the mainland and back.
Find the seat first. Transfer second. Never the other way around. Transfers are one way and permanent, and award space can vanish while your points are in transit.
My process every time: confirm the exact flight and date is showing at 16,000 Avios in Qatar's own booking tool, screenshot it, then transfer only what that ticket needs and book the same day. Is Qatar Avios better than Atmos Rewards?
No, not on price. Atmos saver awards from the West Coast start around 12,500 points, which beats 16,000 Avios, and interisland awards start at 4,500 points, which crushes the 9,500 Avios Qatar charges for the same hop. If Atmos has saver space on your dates and you have Atmos points, book Atmos.
Qatar Avios wins on access. Atmos saver space is not always there, pricing moves on peak dates, and most importantly you cannot feed Atmos from Amex, Chase, Citi, or Capital One. Avios is the currency you can actually build from ordinary spending and welcome bonuses.
- Use Atmos when you have the points, saver space is open, or you are flying interisland. Nothing beats 4,500 points to Maui.
- Use Qatar Avios when Atmos has no space, your points live at a bank Atmos cannot reach, or a transfer bonus is running.
- Use both for a group. Book what you can in Atmos, cover the rest in Avios, and stop treating it as either or.

What is the catch?
Qatar restricted who you can redeem Avios for in 2026, and this is the thing most likely to burn a Hawaiʻi family. You can always book for yourself. To book anyone else, they have to be in one of two structures, and both require your Privilege Club account to be at least 30 days old and to have earned Avios from actual flying or a Qatar co-branded card. Transferring bank points in does not count.
My List holds up to four people, all 18 or older, who must already be Privilege Club members. Family and Friends holds up to six people age two and up, who must not already be members. Both carry a six month lock in.
Open your Qatar Privilege Club account today, before you need it, and get one qualifying earn on the books. The easiest way for us is to add your Privilege Club number to a paid flight on Alaska, Hawaiian, American, British Airways, Iberia, or Finnair. A cheap ticket you were already buying will do it.
There is also an elite bypass. Qatar's terms say Gold and Platinum members can book awards for anyone, even people not on their list, by calling the contact centre. Gold takes 300 Qpoints in twelve months.
How do you book it?
- Open a Qatar Privilege Club account now. It is free, and the 30 day maturity clock starts the day you sign up.
- Get a qualifying earn. Add your number to a paid oneworld flight you are already taking. This unlocks booking for family later.
- Find the seat before you touch your points. Confirm the date shows 16,000 Avios in economy or 43,000 in business in Qatar's booking tool. Screenshot it. This is the step people skip.
- Route the bonus correctly. With Amex, send points to British Airways Club at 1:1.3, not straight to Qatar. Then move the Avios into Privilege Club free. Transfer in 1,000 point increments and round up.
- Book and check the taxes. Domestic nonstops should land near $5.60 each way. If you see hundreds in surcharges, you are looking at a British Airways operated segment. Back out.
- Know the cancellation terms. Roughly $25 to change or cancel more than 24 hours out, around $100 inside 24 hours, and nonrefundable within 3 hours of departure. This is not a program for placeholder bookings.

I love this one, and not because of the 16,000 number. Atmos usually beats it. I love it because it fixes the most frustrating conversation I have with people here.
Somebody comes to me with 120,000 Chase points they have built over two years, all excited, ready to fly the family to Vegas. And I have to tell them Atmos does not take Chase points. You can watch the air go out of the room. That has been the biggest gap in kamaʻāina points strategy since the merger, and Avios closes it. Your Chase points, your Amex points, your Citi points, all of them can become a seat on an Alaska or Hawaiian jet leaving our airport.
I did not just read a chart for this one either. I logged in and ran the searches myself. 121 dates at 16,000 Avios out of Honolulu, 86 of them with business open too. What surprised me was December business showing up completely empty. If holiday lie flat is the goal, that ship has sailed this year, so set a reminder for next spring.
My honest advice: go open a Qatar Privilege Club account tonight. Five minutes. Then next time you buy any flight on Alaska, Hawaiian, or American, even a cheap interisland hop, punch in your Privilege Club number. That one habit is what unlocks booking your spouse and kids later, and it is the step everyone skips until the day they actually need it.
