New Bag Fees Hit Alaska and Hawaiian — Atmos Status Holders Pay Nothing Extra
⏱ 3 min read
If you're flying Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines out of HNL, OGG, KOA, LIH, or ITO and you check bags, heads up. Both carriers just announced a checked baggage fee increase, effective for any flights booked on or after April 10, 2026. Here's what changed, what stayed the same, and how to avoid paying extra.
What the New Fees Look Like
According to Alaska Airlines' official statement, the increases are tied to fuel price volatility and a shifting global environment. Here's the full breakdown, with a kamaʻāina lens:
Who Still Gets Free Bags
The good news is that these increases don't hit everyone. If you're protected by one of these, you're good:
- Atmos Rewards status members keep their existing baggage perks.
- Atmos Rewards Visa or Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard holders continue to enjoy free bag benefits on eligible flights.
- Huakaʻi program members still get one free neighbor island bag. No changes there.
- Active-duty military continue to receive up to five free bags (70 lbs each).
- Tier 1 Elites and oneworld Ruby members keep their one free bag benefit for themselves and companions.
The $5 prepay discount is gone. There's no longer a cheaper option for adding bags early. The new fee is the only fee, so factor that into your total trip cost when booking. For a family of four checking two bags each, the second-bag increase alone adds $40 roundtrip.
Scottie's Take
Honestly, this one stings a little. The loss of the prepay discount on top of the actual fee hike means you're getting hit twice. For most kamaʻāina flying out of HNL, OGG, or the neighbor islands, the fix is simple: hold a card that covers your bags. The Atmos Rewards Visa and Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard both still provide bag benefits, and that alone can more than pay for the annual fee if you fly Alaska or Hawaiian even a few times a year.
