Price the award on LHW.com before you transfer anything. Transfers out of Membership Rewards are one way and permanent. If the night prices at 6 cents instead of 8, you just locked in a mediocre redemption with no way back. Also worth knowing: award stays generally do not earn Leaders Club points and do not count toward status. Why book through Leading Hotels of the World?
Because these are properties that mostly cannot be booked with points any other way. LHW is not a hotel chain. It is a collection of independently owned luxury hotels, which means they do not sit inside Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, or IHG One Rewards.

Three, and all three are on Oʻahu. There are no LHW member properties on Maui, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, or Hawaiʻi Island as of July 2026.
- Halekulani, Waikīkī. The 453-room grande dame on five oceanfront acres, operating in some form since 1907. Cash rates commonly run $700 to $900 and up.
- The Kahala Hotel & Resort, Kāhala. Opened 1964, 338 rooms, ocean-water lagoon, ten minutes from Waikīkī on the quiet side of Diamond Head. Often $600 to $800.

One trade-off to understand. Booking with points through LHW means giving up the Fine Hotels + Resorts package a Platinum Member gets on a cash booking, which typically includes a property credit, breakfast for two, upgrade when available, and noon check-in with 4 p.m. checkout when available. Sterling recovers some of that, but not the credit.
Scottie's Take: is this worth it?
Yes, but narrowly, and probably not for the reason the headlines are pushing.
Two cents per Amex point is a good number, and my live example came in at 2.1, so this is not theoretical. It is also not jaw-dropping. I hit 2 cents fairly regularly moving Membership Rewards to airline partners for lie-flat seats out of HNL, and I do it without giving up an FHR credit or the ability to earn points on the stay. On pure value math, this is a solid B.
Where it gets interesting is the stuff with no substitute. If your dream trip has a specific hotel attached, a place in Positano or the Alps that simply does not exist inside Bonvoy or Hyatt, you are no longer comparing 2 cents to 2 cents. You are comparing 2 cents to writing a $1,400 check. That is when I pull the trigger without hesitating.
On the local three, I will be straight with you. I am not burning 41,500 Amex points on a Waikīkī room fifteen minutes from my house when those points can get my wife and me most of the way to Tokyo. But I get why you would. Halekulani for an anniversary, or The Kahala when mainland family comes in, is a genuinely nice use of points that are otherwise sitting there doing nothing.
