Marriott Bonvoy Free Night Certificates Just Got More Powerful: Top Up With 25,000 Points

Your Marriott Free Night Certificate Just Got More Flexible

If you've ever been this close to booking a great Marriott property with a free night certificate, only to watch the nightly price sit just a few thousand points above your cert's limit, this update is for you. Marriott Bonvoy just raised the top-up limit on free night award certificates from 15,000 points to 25,000 points, effective right now.

Here's How the New Numbers Work

Marriott introduced point top-ups back in 2022, letting members combine extra points with a certificate to unlock pricier properties. The cap was 15,000 additional points. That ceiling just moved up to 25,000, which means each certificate tier can now stretch further:

  • 35,000-point certificate now tops out at 60,000 points
  • 50,000-point certificate now tops out at 75,000 points
  • 85,000-point certificate now tops out at 110,000 points

That extra 10,000-point bump might not sound massive, but it genuinely opens doors. Think nicer city-center hotels in Tokyo, upgraded beach resorts in Southeast Asia, or splurge properties in Europe that were previously just out of certificate range.

Quick Tip If a property prices even a single point above your topped-up maximum, the certificate cannot be applied at all. Always confirm the exact nightly award price before committing your points.

How to Get These Certificates

The easiest path is through Marriott cobranded credit cards. The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex comes with an 85,000-point certificate each year, which topped up to 110,000 points is a serious travel asset. The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless and the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex each come with a 35,000-point certificate annually. Certificates also come from select Marriott promotions and as an elite status perk when you reach 75 elite night credits.

Scottie's Take

As Hawaii locals, we're already paying a premium to get off the island in the first place. Squeezing maximum value out of every certificate and every point is the whole game. This update means your existing certs are worth more today than they were yesterday, with no extra work on your end. If you've been sitting on a free night certificate, now is a great time to pull up award availability and see what's newly within reach.
