My wife and I ran this on our Japan trip this past summer. We stacked every eligible Visa card in the house into one GigSky account, redeemed all of them before we left, and chained the plans one after another so we had data the whole time without buying anything. Can you use more than one Visa card with GigSky?
Yes. GigSky lets you add multiple Visa cards to a single account, and each card carries its own separate benefit that you redeem independently. The cards do not have to belong to the same person. My wife's Visa card lives in my GigSky account alongside mine, and both redeemed without a problem.
GigSky's Visa page says you can add as many cards as you like. I loaded three, which is about where I would cap it anyway. Past that you are managing more expiration timers than the trip is worth.
How much free data can a household stack?
A couple with two Visa Infinite cards gets 6GB spread across 30 days of coverage. One Infinite plus one Signature gets 4GB across 30 days. Every complimentary plan runs 15 days from activation, so the real win is not the gigabytes, it is chaining the windows back to back so a three week trip stays covered.

For what it covers in practice: 3GB handled about two weeks of maps, messaging, rideshare, and pulling up reservations for me in Japan. It is not enough for streaming or photo backup. Download offline maps before you go and set backups to wifi only.
How do you set it up before you leave Hawaiʻi?
Do all of it at home on wifi, not at the gate at HNL. It takes about fifteen minutes, and the iPhone settings are what actually determine whether this works when you land.
Install the app and the eSIM at home
Download GigSky, register, and install the eSIM profile while on wifi. You only install it once. It carries forward to every future trip and plan.
Load every eligible card through the Visa banner
Add your cards one at a time, yours and your spouse's. The account can stay in your name. What matters is that each card is an eligible Visa Signature or Visa Infinite.
Set the default payment card inside GigSky, not Apple Pay
If you check out through Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, the app cannot read the card and you lose the complimentary and discounted pricing.
Redeem every plan now and let them sit
Redeem each card's plan at zero dollars. They park in "My Plans" and do not start counting down until you activate them, up to 365 days out. This is the whole trick.
Lock down your cellular settings
Settings, then Cellular. Confirm your primary line shows Data Roaming off. Select your GigSky line and confirm Data Roaming is on. Then toggle Allow Cellular Data Switching to off, or your phone quietly falls back to your carrier when the GigSky signal dips.
Turn off iMessage and FaceTime before you fly
Settings, then Apps, then Messages, toggle iMessage off. Back out, open FaceTime, toggle it off. Both re-verify your number over your carrier line, which can loop and roam you overseas.
Landing Day Sequence
Airplane Mode off. Wait two to three minutes for the eSIM to find a local network. Open a webpage and confirm data is actually flowing. Only then go back and switch iMessage and FaceTime on. Restore them too early and your phone reaches for your home carrier to do it, which is the exact charge you were avoiding.

What happens when a plan expires mid-trip?
Nothing automatic. GigSky does not roll you into the next saved plan, so you manually activate it in the app, which takes about thirty seconds. If you are on day 16 of a three week trip and did not notice the timer, you simply have no data until you open the app.
- Check the "My Plans" timer every few days rather than finding out on a train platform in Osaka.
- Activate the next plan only once the current one ends. Starting early burns days off the new 15 day window.
- When the free allotments run out, buy in the app. Your 20 or 30 percent Visa discount applies automatically and never expires.
- Back home, switch your data line to your primary SIM, turn the GigSky profile off, and confirm iMessage is linked to your domestic number again. That last one is why friends say your texts came through green for a week after you got back.
Where this strategy falls short
It is a real perk, but it is not a full connectivity plan, and I would rather you hear the limits from me than find them at 11pm in a foreign airport.
- You cannot redeem the Visa Destinations unlimited benefit in your home country. We are US based, so the "United States" entry on that list does nothing for us.
- The World Cup expansion is over. Canada and Mexico were added to the US destination from April 1 through July 31, 2026. That window has closed.
- 15 days is 15 days. No pausing once a plan activates, even if you spend four of those days on resort wifi.
- Cruises are separate. The free plan does not cover at-sea data, though your discount applies to GigSky cruise plans.

The highest value thing here is the "redeem now, activate later" timing. Once I realized the plans just sit in My Plans for up to a year without the clock running, the whole strategy clicked. You are not picking which card to use on which trip. You claim everything at the kitchen table before you leave, then run them like a relay overseas. That is exactly how we covered Japan this summer without paying for a single plan.
The other thing I would tell a friend: the app is the easy part. Every eSIM horror story I hear comes down to cellular settings, specifically Allow Cellular Data Switching being left on. Do the setup at home while you have wifi and time, and landing day becomes a non-event.

Each card is verified separately and carries its own complimentary plan. You are verifying card eligibility, not account ownership, so both plans land in the same "My Plans" list on one phone.
Do both people need the app on their own phones?
Only if you both need data on your own devices. Plans install to the phone that redeems them. If you plan to hotspot from one phone, running everything from a single device is simpler and lets you chain plans without coordinating two apps.
How long can I wait before starting a redeemed plan?
Up to 365 days. A plan redeemed at zero dollars sits inactive in "My Plans" and does not begin counting down until it activates. Once activated, you have 15 days of coverage. This is why the right move is to claim every eligible card's plan at home and start them one at a time on the trip.
Why did I get charged at checkout?
Almost always because the payment method was not the Visa card set directly in the GigSky app. Checking out through Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay hides the card details, so the complimentary and discounted pricing does not apply. Set the eligible Visa card as the default in GigSky and try again.
Does the Visa Destinations unlimited benefit work in Japan?
No. As of August 2026, Visa Destinations covers the United Kingdom, France, the UAE, Thailand, and the United States. Japan is not on that list, so for a Tokyo or Osaka trip you use the complimentary global plan, which works across 175 plus countries. Visa adds destinations over time and your benefit updates automatically.
