What changed with American Express cards in October 2026?
American Express changed three cards between October 1 and October 22, 2026. The Platinum Card got Airbnb on Amex Travel and a renamed Lodging Credit, the Business Platinum got a ZO workspace membership, and the Business Gold traded FedEx for UPS.com. A 2-night hotel rule and narrower Business Gold 4X categories arrive in early 2027.

The Amex Platinum 2-night Fine Hotels + Resorts rule starts January 1, 2027, and the Business Gold 4X category narrowing starts February 17, 2027. How does the new Amex Platinum Lodging Credit work?
The Amex Platinum Lodging Credit is still worth up to $600 a year, paid as up to $300 from January to June and up to $300 from July to December. It now works on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts, The Hotel Collection, and Airbnb Luxe stays of at least 2 nights booked starting at AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app.
| Booking type | Before Oct 22, 2026 | Now | From Jan 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine Hotels + Resorts | 1 night OK | 1 night OK | 2-night minimum |
| The Hotel Collection | 2-night minimum | 2-night minimum | 2-night minimum |
| Airbnb Luxe | Not eligible | 2-night minimum | 2-night minimum |
| Regular Airbnb | Not eligible | Earns 5X, no credit | Earns 5X, no credit |
One quirk with the Airbnb route: you start the search on Amex Travel, link your Amex and Airbnb accounts, then finish the booking on Airbnb. Changes, cancellations and host messages all happen in the Airbnb app.
The one-night Waikiki or neighbor-island staycation was the easiest way for local families to burn the $300 credit. That move works through 2026. Amex ties the credit to when the prepaid charge processes, not your check-in date, so a one-night FHR booking charged in 2026 should still count even for early 2027 travel. Amex has not confirmed that reading, so book by early December, since a charge on December 31 can post in 2027.
What is the $250 Amex Platinum Airbnb Experiences credit?
The Amex Platinum Airbnb Experiences credit gives up to $250 back on Airbnb Experiences bought directly with Airbnb using your Platinum card. It only unlocks after you confirm a qualifying Airbnb Luxe stay, and you have until December 31 of that same year to use it. Business Platinum cardholders get it too. Cancel the Luxe booking and the credit can be clawed back.
Amex says the credit should unlock within 72 hours of your Luxe booking, so call if it does not. Pay for the Experience directly on Airbnb, because Experiences that send you to a third-party site to pay do not count. Airbnb Luxe homes are the top end of the platform, so this perk fits a big family trip more than a weekend away.
What's new on the Amex Business Platinum and Business Gold?
The Amex Business Platinum now includes a free ZO by Tishman Speyer membership with unlimited Clubhouse access, 4 guest passes a week, 4 Studio day passes a month, and up to $500 a year toward ZO event space or a Dining Club membership. The Business Gold kept its $240 credit but swapped FedEx for UPS.com.
Can Hawaii business owners use the ZO membership?
Only on mainland trips. ZO has 20+ spaces in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, DC, with nothing in Hawaii. If you fly to LAX or SFO for work, it is a nice place to set up between meetings. Activate it in the ZO app, no Amex enrollment needed. It is for the basic cardmember only, not employee cards.
What else changes on Business Platinum in 2027?
Starting February 17, 2027, the Amex Business Platinum wireless credit only counts with named carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Spectrum Mobile. The 2X shipping category narrows to FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS and Auctane, the company behind ShipStation. Pirate Ship and Shippo will no longer count.
What changes on Business Gold 4X in 2027?
Starting February 17, 2027, Business Gold advertising 4X will only count with Meta, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, GoDaddy and Yelp. Wireless 4X will only count with listed carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Spectrum Mobile. Restaurants, gas, transit, and electronics and software stay as they are.
How much value did Amex add versus take away?
On paper, Amex added up to $750 in new yearly credits across Platinum and Business Platinum, plus a limited-time Gold offer, while removing the $100 Saks credit. Most of the new money is conditional: the $500 needs ZO event space and the $250 needs an Airbnb Luxe booking first.
What should Hawaii Amex cardholders do right now?
Hawaii Amex Platinum cardholders should book the July to December $300 Lodging Credit by early December 2026, while one-night Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings still qualify. After that, plan 2-night stays or a family Airbnb Luxe trip to use the credit.
- Book your H2 $300 Lodging Credit by early December. A one-night FHR staycation still counts when the charge posts in 2026.
- Grab your Q4 Resy and lululemon credits. They reset October 1 and expire December 31.
- Gold cardholders: check Amex Offers for the Uber One credit, reported to end October 30, 2026.
- Plan 2027 hotel stays at 2 nights. Think a 2-night Maui or Kauai getaway instead of one night in Waikiki.
- Business Gold owners: if your ad spend runs through a local agency or your wireless carrier is not on the list, expect 1X starting February 17, 2027. Compare your options on our best credit cards for Hawaii residents page.

Amex Platinum changes FAQ
Did the Amex Platinum annual fee change in October 2026?
No. The Amex Platinum annual fee stays at $895 as of October 23, 2026. The October changes added Airbnb booking options, renamed the $600 Hotel Credit to the Lodging Credit, and added a $250 Airbnb Experiences credit, with no fee increase announced alongside them.
Can I use the Amex Platinum Lodging Credit on any Airbnb?
No. Only prepaid Airbnb Luxe stays of at least 2 nights, started through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app, count toward the Amex Platinum Lodging Credit. Regular Airbnb listings booked through Amex Travel earn 5X Membership Rewards points on Platinum but do not trigger the credit.
Do one-night hotel stays still work for the Amex Platinum credit?
Yes, for Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings charged in 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings need at least 2 nights to earn the Amex Platinum Lodging Credit. Book by early December so the charge posts in 2026. The Hotel Collection already required 2 nights, so nothing changes there.
How do I unlock the $250 Airbnb Experiences credit?
Book and confirm a qualifying Airbnb Luxe stay first, then pay for Airbnb Experiences directly with Airbnb using your Amex Platinum or Business Platinum. You can get up to $250 back through December 31 of that year. Amex says it unlocks within 72 hours. Canceling the Luxe stay can reverse the credit.
Is the Amex Business Platinum ZO membership useful in Hawaii?
Not at home. ZO by Tishman Speyer has 20+ locations in six mainland cities: New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington, DC. Hawaii business owners can use it on mainland work trips. The membership is free with no Amex enrollment, and you activate it in the ZO app.
What replaced FedEx on the Amex Business Gold credit?
UPS.com replaced FedEx on the Amex Business Gold $240 Flexible Business Credit on October 1, 2026. The credit still pays up to $20 a month after enrollment on eligible purchases at UPS.com, Grubhub, and U.S. office supply stores. Pay on UPS.com directly, not at a store counter.
Scottie's Take
Okay, real talk. The Airbnb stuff is cool, but most of us are not booking castles and private islands. For local families, the change that actually matters is the 2-night rule. That one-night staycation at a nice Waikiki hotel was the easy button for the $300 credit, and it goes away January 1.
So here's what I'm doing: I'm booking my second-half credit on a one-night stay before December, then planning 2027 around 2-night neighbor-island trips where the credit covers a bigger chunk anyway. Honestly, two nights on Maui beats one night in town.
If you've got the Business Platinum, enjoy ZO when you're in LA or SF, just don't keep the card for it. And Business Gold folks, check where your ad and phone money goes before February.
